Customising numbering in Table of Contents
Hi
I have a bunch of headings (defined using heading styles - only 1 level) that I want to make into a table of contents. Using the normal table of contents tools, I get a table that looks like: 1. Bla bla 2. dsk gks 3. sjk3 skgl But I want it to be: Section 1. Bla bla Section 2. dsk gks etc. etc. Currently, my heading styles are formatted with numbering (in the form "1."). I don't want to define the heading styles to have numbering formatted as "Section 1.", as I only want the headings throughout the document to have the number in front of them. Is this at all possible? Sorry if my description is as clear as mud! Thanks |

Customising numbering in Table of Contents
You would have to unlink the table of contents by selecting it and then
using Ctrl+Shift+F9 and then you could use a Wildcard Replace (EditReplace, click More and then check Use wildcards) in which you enter ^13([0-9]{1,}).^t in the Find what control and ^pSection \1.^t in the Replace with control You should do this on a copy of the document in case subsequent revisions are likely ot change the table of contents and have (what was the table of contents selected when you do the Edit.Replace and tell Word to stop searching when it asks if you want to perform the operation on the rest of the document. -- Hope this helps. Customising numbering in Table of Contents
I haven't tested this, but it's worth a try. Look at my article at
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/TOCTips.htm, the part that talks about adding numbering in the TOC to unnumbered headings. It's just barely possible that if you can add Section # numbering, you could equally well add just the "Section" part (followed by a space) as the "numbering." That would put the "Section" before the existing numbering brought over from the headings themselves. Note that you'll need to apply the numbering from the Outline Numbered tab, which allows you to choose to follow the numbering with a space rather than a tab; the Numbered tab permits a tab only. -- Suzanne S.
