Default TOC - wrong page numbers when doc is sent as attachment

I attached a Word document in my mail but when the recipient opens the doc,
the table of contents shows all contents with page 2. When he saves the
attachment, the page numbers in the TOC becomes correct. Why is this so?
Can anybody help? How to make sure that when doc is opened in mail, it shows
correct page numbers in the TOC?

Convert your Word document to Acrobat .pdf format, and email the
..pdf file.

The receiver of the document has to update the list of contents.
Right click with the mouse in the margin left of the list of contents.
Update field
Update entire table

Your recipient should not be opening attachments directly from email, but
you can't control that. You could note it in your email message, though.
