Default Scanning into word

How do I scan directly into Word from my scanner menu. My scanner asks me
what file I would like to save the scan in, but not what program I would like
to open the scan with. If I scan with the Office Document Imager, when I open
the scan in Word, it completely loses it's format. All text is smashed
together. I just want to scan in forms to be filled out (filling in the
blanks) but if I ever get the scan into Word the Blanks are no longer there.
Please Help Me

You can either scan to a graphics format (the usual output of a scanner) or
into OCR software that converts the document to text (Microsoft Document
Imaging is but a rudimentary form of OCR software). Neither will produce a
document that you can open in Word and 'fill in the blanks' without a great
deal of work.

For a one off, use a pen and forget all about Word.

If you insist then insert the scanned image as a background image at 100%
size and create a form over it using (borderless) tables..

If you have a need to produce lots of editable forms or to collate many such
forms then there are specialised form filling packages that will read
scanned forms - but they tend to be expensive. The corporate version of
Finereader 6 had such a form filling tool included, but it appears to have
been removed from more recent versions and modified to sell as a stand-alone
product. If you are lucky enough to have that version of Finereader the form
module makes the job very simple.

Scan and save as a text document. Then open the text document with Word.
You will loose formatting, but that's easy to fix. It's a lot easier
than any other way that I can think of.
