Default How do I close a document but leave application open?

I want to be able to close a word document, but have the application still
open. I know on some machines it does this, but cannot find the setting.
When I click on File Save As.... and save the document, the whole
application closes.

Save as shouldn't close Word. Are you sure that's what you're doing?

In any event, Ctrl+F4 closes just the document while leaving Word open.

I know it shouldn't and on most of the machines it doesn't. It will also
close the application if you just choose FileClose. I know that the user
can also just close the document by clicking on the small x below the larger
one. It is more of an inconvienence for the user. She is use to doing it
the other way, while having the application remain open. She forgets to do
it that way. I know that her Excel application remains open when she goes to
Fileclose or Save as.... I am not sure what she did or what happened that
Word no longer functions this way. It has to be some kind of setting.

Hi raperry - Did you ever get this resolved? The same problem just started
happening on my com;uer too. I never had this happen to me before, but all of
a sudden, when I try to just close a document, the whole application closes.
A pain and waste of time...
