I'm creating a master document with several sub documents.
Word auto-creates the whole path as part of the URL ~ I dont want that, I
want the sub-documents to be relative to the master wherever they are.
For example they start life in c:\word\somefolder Later they might live on
the network for a while, concurrently they might be saved to a CD.
I have found the hyperlink baseline however that does not help when burning
to a CD where my CD is the D: drive and theirs is the F: drive!

I want a function "Just look in the same place as the master document"

Sorry, I don't have an answer because I don't use Master Documents. However,
you may need the reason I don't more than you need an answer. "Master
Document" is a term of art in Word referring to a "feature" that not only
doesn't work but also destroys documents. The consensus (with the limited
exception of Steve Hudson) among those offering advice on these newsgroups
is that using the Master Document feature is a good way to destroy your
document. It can destroy parts of your document that you are not even
working on! I think John McGhie said it succinctly when he said that there
are two kinds of Master Documents: Those that are corrupt and those that
will be corrupt soon. See

Later versions of Word will do this by default, even what you SEE in Word is a
full path. Have you tried moving the entire set of documents to a different
location, to see if the master still finds the sub documents?

settings". How can I cause an automatic update to reference the files in the
same directory as the document? I have over a hundred files referenced in the
document.

If I'm reading your answer correctly, you're saying that Word automatically
recognized, and was able to open, the set of files when you moved it to a new
folder: "I had to move all of the files to a different directory and in the

So Word is doing what it needs to do: adjusting the path automatically when you
move the entire set of files.

There is NO WAY to manually change the hyperlink to point to this or that folder.
The hyperlink is ALWAYS generated by Word, and can only be generated by Word.
