Default Office 2007 problems when saving in compatibility mode (office 200

When I save a Word 2007 document to be compatible with older versions of
Word, occasionally the document becomes read-only, this doesn't happen with
all Word documents immediately but eventually over a short period of time,
all Word 2007 documents that are saved to be compatible become read-only.

I have checked the protection status of the documents and there is no write
protection enabled. I have tried solving the problem by adding read-only
protection, then removing this read-only protection but it does not resolve
the issue. The documents are still read-only.

The Office suite is fully up to date with all updates, and there appears to
be no errors else where.

Please help, the only way around this is to save the document with another
file name, which eventually becomes read-only, so I have to 'save as' again
repeating the whole process.
