Default Random space in updated reference fields?

When I use cross references to sequential fields (such as Tables or Figures),
the fields update properly, but randomly add two or more spaces in front of
the text. No formatting I've tried removes these. Why are the spaces there
and how do I get rid of them?

Hi ?B?RWNvdG9wZQ==?=,

Version of Word? In which fields are you seeing the additional spaces: the SEQ
fields or the cross-refs?

What option are you selecting from the list on the right when inserting a
cross-ref?
