Default Disable write protection word 2002

I am running Word 2002. I received a document and I can't edit it.
I'm not sure how the write protection is implemented. I tried changing
macro security to high, and disabling VBA, but it didn't allow me to
edit.

I am able to save as RTF, then open in Wordpad and re-save as
something else. But then I lose a lot of the formatting.

Anyone know how to disable the write protection? And out of
curiosity, how the heck did they set up the protection?

Did they simply set the read only file attribute in Windows?

No, I think it would say "Read Only" in the title bar. But when I
right click - Properties, read only is not checked. "Archive" was
checked, so I unchecked it to see what that would do. But it didn't
change anything.
