Default Total Page Numbers in Footer

Dear all,

I am still getting to grasp with office 2007 and I have looked through
numerous how-tos and demos and topics here on my problem but couldn't find
the right help.

I want to create a document that I'll use as a template. I'd like it to
feature a custom-made cover page and the document pages afterwards. I would
like my footer to contain the page numbers but these should not appear on the
cover page and the numbering should start from the second page onwards and
the total number of pages should not include the cover page.

I have managed as far as the first (cover) page not containing the page
number (Different First Page appropriately ticked). I read about section
breaks that would mean that I can start the page numbering on the second page
but that didn't happen. Also I inserted the building block 'page x of y' but
whatever I tried it always starts on 2 (I want it to start on 1) and the
total number includes the first page.

I understood from the helps that if I introduce a section break this should
be solved but it didn't. I hope I managed to describe the problem clearly
and someone can help me give a solution. Thank you very much.

Insert a Next Page Section Break at the end of the Cover Page to create the
second page of the document and go to the Footer of the new Section and
unlink it from the Footer in the first Section of the document (and also
make sure that in the Page Setup dialog on the Layout tab, you uncheck the
Different first page if it is checked. In the footer, insert the following
fields either from the Insert tabQuick PartsFields or by using Ctrl+F9 to
insert the field delimiters { } and type the words inside them

{ PAGE } of { SECTIONPAGES }

To get the page number to start at 1, on the Insert tab of the Ribbon,
activate the Page Number drop down and click on Format Page Numbers and then
set the Page Number to Start from 1. Then click on OK.

Hope this helps.
