Default column help

can you create create independent columns in word2003?

example:
i create 2 columns on my page, but when space runs out in the first column,
the cursor doesn't go to the beginning of the next column on the same page
but goes to the first column on the next page. similarly, when you run out
of space in the second column on the first page, the cursor continues to the
beginning of the second column on the next page.
