I think it would be extremely useful to have a true backup feature in Word,
where Word creates a backup copy of the file as it currently exists when
saved. Retention of a backup copy of the previous version could also be an
option, as this would allow one to recover after "oops saves" when one has
inadvertently saved after changes without using Save As.

In addition, it would be nice to have the option to save the backup copy to
a separate folder. This would avoid the clutter of having twice as many
files in the normal folder.
