Default How to open earlier version of a document?

I opened a document in Word 2003 and gutted it keeping only the format and
then (like a dummy) saved it under the same name. I need my original
document back. The assistance board said go to -file--versions- but I have no
such sub heading under the file button or function...My Office may be the
educational discount (student and teacher) edition if that makes a
difference. Anyway to recover the original?

Makes no difference, Craig. Any one of us would be SOL. The likelihood of
ANYONE being able to recover your file are fairly slim and VERY expensive.
But think... did you email it to anyone recently?

I just found a posting from Herb Tyson dated Sept 30 on this topic.
Following his advice, I checked and did not have the Tools-Option-Save-Backup
toggle set to On so guess I am out of luck, I will be making backups from now
on, you can bet. Time to retype 5 single spaced pages...

Anne Troy,
Thanks, my wife did come up with a copy I had printed off to share with her.
Since it was an attachment for a course paper, I might be able to salvage it
by erasing a few margin notes and try to pass it off on my professor. Or I
might turn to researching OCR recognition using my scanner and generate
another post to this forum!

Thanks for the memory jogger.

Craig, I tried a few and found ReadIris to provide the best results, and I
only needed the trial version. Check it out.

And if you had not closed the document, you could have used Undo to get back
to the original version.
