Word allows more than one index in a simngle document via the \f option. For
example, you can format an entry like this: {XE "Schuyler, Michael" \f "c" }
and the entry will appear in Index "c" rather than the defaul (i) which
requires no \f code.

You invoke an index by Insert - Field - Index. At the bottom of the
resulting box is a "field codes" button. If you click it the top of the box
changes from an "Index" button to one that allows you to insert the \f codes
like this: INDEX \f "c". If you press OK right there, the index is produced,
but with no formatting.

To FORMAT an index you must first Hide the field codes (button provided)
then click on the now visible index button, then choose formatting such as
numbe rof columns, right justification, etc. The only way out of the
formatting box is Cancel, which does just that, or OK, which commences
building the index. HOWEVER, the index it builds is ALWAYS the default index
and NEVER the secondary one you detailed in the format codes options bpox on
the previous screen.

It LOOKS LIKE Word doesn't work correctly. It will build a formatted default
index or an unformatted secondary index, but it cannot build a formatted
secondary index, which, of course, is precisely what I want to do.
