backup copy could be saved in a user specified folder
This is not possible because of the way the "backup" is created.

Why not?
Saving files can be made to any folder, not only the folder were the original file resides! Besides it is a copy, not another versin of the original file... "Suzanne S. backup copy could be saved in a user specified folder
It depends on what "backup" you're talking about. A backup that you create
manually can be saved anywhere. The "Backup of filename.wbk" file that Word creates when you enable "Always create backup copy" must be in the document folder for the reasons stated in €śDescription of how Word creates temporary files€ť http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632. It has also been mentioned that you may well have several documents with the same name in different folders; if all the backups were saved in the same (backup) folder, there would be conflicts. -- Suzanne S.
