Hi - I have Word 2007 which is part of the Office 2007 Professional Suite
that is being run on XP Pro SP2. I only want the header to appear on the
*first* page of a multi-page *letter* document.

Question: How do I accomplish this?

the Page Setup section). In the Layout tab, click Different first page. This
will enable the first and subsequent pages to have distinct headers
(footers, too), without the need for a section break.

ruler.

group). In the dialog, click the Layout tab and check the option for
Different First Page. Click OK.

This gives you two different headers, one for the first page and
another for all other pages.

Go to the Insert tab of the ribbon, click the Header button, and
either choose one of the headers in the gallery or choose Edit Header
from the bottom of the gallery. The text and/or cursor will appear in
the header area, which is tagged with "First Page Header". Anything
you put there will appear only on page 1.

*first* page. The header remains on the subsequent pages.

It isn't an "option", you have to physically move the material from
one header to the other.

If you only have one page in the document, insert a temporary page
break at the bottom of the page so you can see the header on page 2.

Select the text (and anything else) from the page 2 header, cut it to
the clipboard, go to the first page header, and paste.

on the first page when you choose this setting, since that's what people
usually want. It's a simple matter, however, to go into the 2nd page header,

Whew - that's quite a read for what should be a simple task. The problem I
have Suzanne, is that I don't understand what the page break is supposed to
do.

New Question: Is it possible *not* to have a "header section"?

If so, I can just create a template with the "header" as part of the body
and type below what is a "false header" for each new letter. That seems to
be the simplest solution.

The page break is not necessary at all if you set up the primary header
first, then enable "Different first page," then set up the First Page
Header. And yes, you can leave either of the headers blank. See

Ok - thanks Suzanne, I finally got it. I checked Different first page, then
deleted the header on the second page, and now I only get the header on the
first page.

first, then enable "Different first page," then set up the First Page
Header. And yes, you can leave either of the headers blank. See
