Default how do I get alternate R and L page numbers

i can insert page numbers but they will not appear odd to the R and even to
the L. How do I achieve that?

Default how do I get alternate R and L page numbers

If you are using Word 2003 or earlier and will not have anything in the
header/footer other than the page numbers (and it's a relatively simple
document), you can use Insert | Page Numbers and choose Outside as the
positioning. Otherwise, it is recommended (and required in Word 2007) that
you enabled "Different odd and even" for headers/footers and place your PAGE
field appropriately in the Odd Page Header/Footer and Even Page
Header/Footer.
