Default word does not automatically replace selected text

word used to automatically replace highlighted text with new text when I
selected and typed. For some reason its stopped doing that and i now have to
manually delete the selected text. Does anyone know why?

Word 2003 and earlier: Tools Options Edit check "Typing replaces
selection".

Word 2007: Office button Word Options Advanced Editing options check
"Typing replaces selected text".

Default word does not automatically replace selected text

Or, simply press the "Insert" key on your keyboard -- and be careful
you don't accidentally touch it when you type "Backspace" or "Delete."
