Removing Office 97 on Windows XP Pro
I don't know why article KB290336 does not mention using Microsoft Office
Removal Wizard, although I think in principle it would work. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290366/en-us Above shows use of Microsoft Office Removal Wizard (offcin.exe). (Admittedly normally when one has bought Microsoft Office XP). http://www.microsoft.com/office/orkarchive/XPddl.htm Above shows how to obtain offcin.exe, it's within OrkTools.exe. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/254250/ The above article is entitled: "OFF97: How to Completely Remove Microsoft Office 97 on Windows XP, Windows Me, and Windows 2000." No mention in the above article though about using Microsoft Office Removal Wizard. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/176823 Previous utility: Eraser97.exe, which is disabled for Windows XP. Do you think I could use the Office Removal Wizard to remove Office 97 on my Windows XP Professional? If not then I'd have to do some manual deletions. TIA. |

Removing Office 97 on Windows XP Pro
Actually MS articles are not written too well. When you take all the clutter
the instructions are no so bad. OFF97: How to Completely Remove Microsoft Office 97 on Windows XP, Windows Me, and Windows 2000. This is my revamp. I think it's correct: How to Completely Remove Microsoft Office 97 on Windows XP, Windows Me, and Windows 2000 Notes: Service Release SR1 and SR2b are associated with Office 97. Instructions to remove SR1 is contained in article KB 176823. SR2b is integrated into Office 97 and so is removed whenever Office 97 or individual components are removed. SR1 is removed after Office 97 has been completely removed. (SR2b should always be run after changes are made to the installation of Office 97.) To remove Office 97 from other Windows operating systems see KB 158658 and KB 176823. Warning: If Outlook Express 98 is installed, you must remove it before removing Office 97. This may be accomplished by using Microsoft Office Removal Wizard. a) Using Add/Removal Program Utility 1. If you are using Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. If you are using Microsoft Windows XP, click Start and then click Control Panel. 2. If you are using Windows 2000 or Windows Me, double-click Add/Remove Programs. If you are using Windows XP, click Add or Remove Programs. In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft Office 97, and then click Change/Remove. If you installed Microsoft Office from a CD, you are prompted to insert the first CD. If a dialog box displays a message that states that programs are running, quit the programs, and then click OK. 3. In the Microsoft Office 97 Setup dialog box, click Remove All. 4. When you are prompted to remove shared components, click Remove All. b) Further Manual Removal of Folders and Files Warning: If you have other programs, such as Microsoft Project or Microsoft Publisher, installed in the Microsoft Office folder, if you delete the Microsoft Office folder, you may need to reinstall these programs. Some of the files located in the folders to be removed may contain macros, templates, or other customisations that you may want to save. You should back up these files, so that you can restore them after you reinstall Office. They include the following: Normal.dot Custom.dic *.xlb Personal.xls Blank.pot *.pst *.pab *.acl except Mso97.acl Deleting the Microsoft Office folder also deletes the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart folder, which may contain personal files. Ensure that all personal files are removed from this folder before you delete it. Deleting the Microsoft Office folder deletes the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates folder, which may contain personal templates. Ensure that all personal files, including custom macros, are removed from this folder before you delete it. 1. In Windows Explorer, delete these folders: x:\Program Files\Microsoft Office x:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Vba x:\Program Files\Common Files\ODBC x:\Windows\Temp\Vbe where x is the drive letter to which Microsoft Office 97 is installed 2. In Windows Explorer, delete the files in the following folders. NOTE: username is the name of the user who is logged on to the computer. If multiple users log on to the computer using different user names, each user has separate .acl and .pcb files. All of these files can be deleted.
