Default InsertStyleSeparator - Word 2007 issues

This may cross borders with other versions, too.

This issue comes up when trying to format a portion of a paragraph as
Heading x - for TOC purposes - and the rest of the paragraph as normal, as
documented in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/285059

Using the InsertStyleSeparator command (Ctrl-Alt_enter) while typing in a
new document or at the end of an existing document, all is well. However, if
a new paragraph is inserted before an existing para, use of the command fouls
up the formatting in the following para.

Two options: first is I'm doing something wrong, but that can't POSSIBLY be
the case. Second is that Word isn't behaving properly.

Anybody else encounter this, and are there any prescribed steps for doing
this, or other workarounds?

After a great deal of experimentation, I discovered the way to deal with this:

You need an extra paragraph marker between your new text and the next REAL
paragraph.

Thus, if you want to insert a new paragraph that will have a header to be
included in the TOC, insert a new paragraph with the Enter key, then hit
Enter again.

Type the text that is to be Normal-formatted part of the paragraph.
Now move up before the first first inserted paragraph, select the desired
Header format, and type the header text, THEN press Ctrl-Alt-Enter. This
apparently serves to 'hide' the intervening paragraph mark and leaves your
work in the proper format to build the TOC as it should
