Default Table Does not show in Doc

I'm using WinNT with Word 97. I have lost the table. What I mean is that
tables do not show up. All the text is there, left justified, but not in a
table format. If I go in and create a new doc with a table and save it.
Then open it the table is not there. Anyone have any ideas as to why this
is happening. I will add that just before this happened I was trying to
open a Word text doc. I did something and don't know what.

Check what format you're saving the documents as (the 'Files of type' list
on the Open and Save dialogs) -- it sounds like they're being saved as plain
text, not as Word documents. Text files lose all formatting, including
tables.

Does the file look correct if you open it from the MRU list at the bottom of
the File menu? If so, in the File | Open dialog, change the "Files of type"
setting from "Recover Text from Any File" to "All Word Documents."
