After clicking an inner document link (link to another location within the
same document, such as an appendix), is there a quick way to go "back" to
where I was - similar to using "back" when navigating a web page?

In W2007's all commands list (Word Options Customize), there is a back
button (also described as WebGoBack) that you can add to the QAT. It may
also be available in W2003.

Not only is it available in Word 2003 and earlier, it can be added to any
toolbar. In addition, the keyboard shortcut Alt+Left Arrow will perform the
same function. In many cases, Shift+F5 will also work.
