First of all, create a backup copy of your document. You could then try to
open the document using the open and repair option: in Word, click the
Office button, choose Open, browse for your file and then hit the little
arrow next to the open button to choose open and repair.

If that doesn't work, you could try opening the document with OpenOffice
Writer. OpenOffice is a free alternative to Microsoft Office and can be
downloaded from http://www.openoffice.org/ . It tends to be better at
recovering damaged Word documents than Word is.

If that doesn't work either, and the file has an extension of .docx rather
than .doc (so it's one of the new ones created with Word 2007 or later), try
changing the extension from .docx to .zip. Then open the file in Windows
Explorer (just double click it). If that succeeds, look for a file called
"document.xml" in the archive. That's the one containing your text. You will
have some work cleaning it up as it is full of xml tags, but at least you
will still have your original text.
