Are you trying to open a file that is on a floppy or CD? Word needs plenty
of write-space in the same location as the file & removable media doesn't
provide it. Never open from or save to removable media.

Copy the file to your hard drive, open & work with that copy. When done (if
necessary) copy the revised file back to the other disk.

If that isn't the situation you may need to better make the distinction
between *memory* (RAM) and free space on your hard drive - they are *not*
the same thing & Word needs both. Your hard drive may need to be
defragmented/free space consolidated. Even though the amount of free space
may sound like a lot it may be scattered around in small chunks that Word
can't use.

I knew well enough that you never SAVE to removable media, and why, but
never to OPEN from it? That's a new one on me.

Because of the proliferation of temp files in the folder in which the
document resides. At minimum, Word must create an "owner" file, and it often
creates a lot of ~wrlxxxx.tmp files as well. This is naturally impossible on
CDs and can quickly become impractical on floppies.

Is this just any document or a single document. If it is a single document,
the chances are it is corrupt. If it is any document, then there are several
possibilities. See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/...peningWord.htm
