While typing a document the first number of pages are as the should be, but,
the rest of the pages including any new pages been added have changed text
colour from black to red with a continous line been displayed down the left
habd side of the document, it is nothing to do with font types or colours,
any advice on what has happened.

You are tracking changes. You need to turn off the tracking, and also accept
all the changes that have been recorded.

The way of doing this depends on your version of Word - if Word 2002 or Word
2003, the "track changes" toggle is on the Reviewing toolbar, and the
"Accept all" option on a dropdown menu beside the Accept button.
