A very bizarre thing has happened to me. I was editing a document, and I must
have done something bad or wrong, because now all page numbers and the table
of contents list is marked in grey, and I can't get rid of the marking. BTW,
all my old documents now also have marked (in the color of grey) page numbers
and marked table of contents. What do I do to get rid of this unwanted
effect? Hope someone can help. I'm desperate!

The shading shows that a field exists there. In Tools Options View, set
the "Field shading" dropdown to "never" or "when selected".
