Default How do I update page numbers on a contents page without using TOC?

I'm using Word 2003 and want to automatically update the page numbers on the
contents page of a constantly changing document. The Table of Contents
function doesn't have enough formatting options.
I've tried 'Cross-reference' but I'm finding the help pages not very helpful
- or perhaps I'm being very dull! Please can someone explain this?
Thanks

You are reinventing the wheel and you want help. This is a big job. You need
to explain, in detail, what it is that you want that isn't on the wheel that
you can buy at your local hardware store.

In other words, what can't you get from the table of contents features that
are built into Word? "doesn't have enough formatting options" What are you
trying to do?

Thanks for replying Charles.

The contents page has been designed to match other company documents and is
in a specific style which I don't think the TOC function can replicate.
However, from what you say maybe I should keep trying - I just thought there
would be an easy answer. Is it not possible to insert a Field Code on the
contents page which will update along with the page numbering?

Yes, it is possible. But it is hard. It is a kludge. Chances are very good
you can do what you want using the built-in TOC functions. You can change
the TOC styles the same as you can change other styles. The rough way to do
this is through the TOC dialogs. You can fine-tune, though, using the modify
style dialog. Take a look at http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/TOCTips.htm.

Right now, you are like a person asking how to create heading styles with
all of the features of the built-in heading styles without using the
built-in ones because he/she doesn't like the way the built-in ones look. It
is much simpler to change the way the built-in ones look.

You might see http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/TOCTips.htm for some of the
things you *can* do with Word's TOC field.
