Am using Windows XP + Internet explorer + Windows Office:
Am using a Dell 6000 + wireless LAN:

Tried to import data using tools, research, selecting MSN Money
Stock Quotes and trying to download MSFT stock qote (all this per pg
258/259 in Teach Yorself Visually Excel 2003) but I continuously get
error messages indicating that the server / proxy server is not found
even when I have no problems connecting directly to Yahoo using the
Internet explorer directly.

I have also tried to export web data directly from Yahoo financial to
Excel but with similar message.

Can someone explain to me why this occurs and what can I do to get the
connection between Excel and the Internet.

You're more likely to get help if you post in an Excel newsgroup; this one
is for Word.
