Default Odd Fomatting in Word 2003

OK - here we go.
I have a document, which I have to use as part of a Web based Help File
project.
Now, this is where it gets weird.
The text supplied is all in UPPER case.
Now if I now try to change it to: lower/capitalize/small caps it doesn't
change.
If I now type in some text, that text, and only that which I've typed in,
behaves perfectly.
Yes - I have converted it to plain txt, notepad, command line editor,
(didn't have a copy of EDLIN to try), and there doesn't appear to be any odd
formatting characters.
I've tried this on two different PC's, so that rules out that.
Any answers greatfully recieved, as I'm slowly starting to foam at the mouth.

Suzanne (if I may call you that?)
Hi, and good morning!
Yes - changing the font works fine, as does bold/italic etc. It's just that
it won't swap from upper to Capitalize, ie the first character of each
sentence won't switch to upper case.
I found a macro for Excel that'll change everything to lower case so that
it'll paste in correctly - I couldn't find one for Word, but popping
everything into cell A1, run the macro, and copy/paste the result doc into
Word works perfectly.
The pain is that it's a huge doc (company policies for a Casino).
I really do appreciate your feed-back on this one.
Thanks
Al

I didn't say anything about changing the font; I asked about Format | Change
Case. You should be able to select "Sentence" capitalization for the effect
you want (though you'll still have to go back and capitalize any proper
nouns in the sentences. This will change even UPPERCASE. I assume that the
text does not have All Caps formatting applied and that it is not an All
Caps font (some fonts have no lowercase characters).
