Default Hyperlink to pdf document from Word 2007

Hi

I'm running Word 2007 on XP

If I have an existing pdf document on my computer and create a hyperlink to
this document, when trying to open it, it gives error message:
"No program is registered to open this file."

In the "Address:" box has "appa.pdf" and is in the same directory as the
Word document.

If I create a hyperlink to the original document on the web it will open it
okay.
In the "Address:" box it has "http://www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/aeo/pdf/appa.pdf"

In both cases from the Hyperlink edit box it has:
"Existing File or Web Page" and
"Current Folder"

Don't have problems linking to other Word documents, Excel or text document
that open in Notepad.

Not sure if this is related but in Windows explorer the pdf document
appa.pdf displays under the "Type" heading that it's an "OmniPage Image File"

Many thanks for any help as I've been searching/trying fixing this for a
while with no luck.

This is not a Word issue. It concerns Adobe Reader/Acrobat and your browser.

The solution is in your question "No program is registered to open this
file."

Associate Adobe Reader/Acrobat with PDF files on your PC

Open Adobe Acrobat Reader and click Edit, Preferences. Choose Internet in
the Preferences window. Uncheck Display PDF in browser option and close the
dialog. Repeat the same and this time, enable the Display PDF in browser
option.

Hi Graham

Thanks for quick response, unfortunately it didn't work. Even tried as admin
in case it was an access problem.

I actually opened the document in OpenOffice 3.1 and can get it to work no
problems. That suggests to me it's not Adobe Reader or else it would have the
same problem under OpenOffice.

Hmmm. I downloaded the file from the internet, and hyperlinked to it from
Word 2007. The file opened as expected (albeit after a security warning) in
Acrobat (which is associated with PDF files here). If PDF is correctly
associated with Acrobat or Reader I cannot account for the problem.

Default Hyperlink to pdf document from Word 2007

Hi Graham

Many thanks for the effort and trying, it is a mystery!! I'll keep
trying/searching as it really bugs me:-)

If I can figure out how it opens text documents correctly using Wordpad and
not Notepad might point to solution. I'm playing with file types and
associated file types and what it uses to open as per when using Windows
Explorer
