Default Times New Roman Font Issue

Hi, I have a document that's in Times New Roman. When I try to type, it's as
if I had only room for one letter and each letter is typed on top of that.
If I type "this", I would see the t then the h would go on top of the t - not
replacing it, but on top of it.

If I change the font to something other than Times New Roman, this problem
disappears, however, all of my documents are in Times New Roman so I would
have to change the font every time I open a document.

Any ideas?

Thank you.
