I can't seem to find an answer to this: I want to create an 17 x 11
document, and Word will not allow me to, I guess because my printer
can't print it.

Apparently, nobody ever thought of creating an unprintable document and
emailing it to the copy shop.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Office 2007 there is an add-in

Or download a driver that is capable of printing tabloid. You don't need the
physical printer.

that's not the question I asked: I need to know how to make the 17 x 11
word document, so to make the 17 x 11 pdf document. Word won't accept a
17 x 11 paper size, at least the last time I tried it.

Word will accept any paper size your 'printer' supports. Any pdf-writer that installs as a print driver enables Word to create a
document of any size supported by that driver. All you need to do is to select the pdf-writer as the target 'printer'.

Likewise, you could install the print driver for any printer that supports the desired page size. Preferably, you'd use a postscript
print driver. That way, if you use that driver to print the document to file, you'll get a postscript file that can be sent to your
printshop. Postscript is supported by almost any printshop worth doing business with and eliminates the problems you can get with
page layouts changing when you send Word documents to third parties who use different printers/drivers to yours.

Have you tried from the other end - the printer you do have.
Sometimes default settings in the printer itself and the driver can restrict
the paper sizes available and hence Word will only allow the sizes available.
Try changing the driver settings to allow the required paper size, sometimes
the driver will only allow sizes that the pritner itself has settings for. So
you may need to check the allowed settings on the printer itself, then the
driver will pick up the new size, and then Word will allow the new size.
Check with the specifications for your printer (book or manufacturer webiste).
If the printer you have does not handle the size you want, then follow the
ideas in the previous postings.

11x17 pages and several other unusual page sizes.

2. Locate a safe site that has printer drivers with those characteristics
available for download.

a fabulous idea! I have that capability at work, so I can learn how to
use it and get it for home. I may not have been clear in prior posts
that I am at step 1, creating the document. after it is complete, I
translate it into pdf, but I mean this software is fighting me big time.
I tried to start this in publisher, and it made an 17 x 11 page, as if
it would fit on an 8½ x 11 page, and I was screaming!

um, apparently, this is easier said than done. I went through the
control panel and "added" Microsoft Office Document Imaging, which
appears to be talking about scanning and OCR, which is not creating a
ledger sized document. could you expand on your comments? thanx in adv.

You need to have the Microsoft Office Document Image Writer *print driver*
installed on your computer. Mine was installed when I installed Office.
Check the Name dropdown list of the Print dialog. As I said before, with it
as your selected printer (either temporarily make it your default printer or
just print something to it), Word will allow you to format your document
using ledger (11x17) paper. If you actually print to it, you'll get a file.

I've used it at my home office to do a rough format of a document, which I
finish using the drivers and printers at my client's site . I've also
created PDFs. In both cases there can be shifting and different word wrap, so
I don't set things up too tightly.

Okay, Pam, I think we are triangulating here. I will search out the
driver and see if I can get it installed, Lord knows how, but I will. At
present, there is just my local printer as an option. At work, I also
have CutePDF, but I think that costs money . . . many thanks for trying
to help my poor efforts!
