Default error message: not valid win32 application

updated from word in office xp to work in office ultimate and now when I try
to open any document created in a version of word other than word2007 I get
the message that: xxxx.DOC is not a valid win32 application.

what gives?
How do I fix it?

thank you,
Luis

A couple more details:

If open Word and open the document from there, no problem. It's when I just
click on it that it won't open and I get the above message!

also, I am running vista.

thank you,
Luis
