Default OS is windows xp & still using word 97,if I upgrade to word 2003 .

I upgraded to windows xp over a year ago,but I was still able to use word 97
oem version from windows 98 with some problems.

now, moving files displays error messages & the files are availabl in wordpad
& word 97. I think it is best I get word that will run on windows xp.

My question,if I install will all current word documents be available in
word 2002 or 2003?
