Problem formatting Wordpad (and often Word)
I'm having a terrible repeat problem with Wordpad I use sometimes for its
simplicity and Word in getting the margins correct. I'm using MOS 2003 and WinXPSP2. I have had the problem with Word before, but not Wordpad. I have tried to use FormatTabs and FormatParagraph to correct this and the Help but gotten nowhere. Obviously need to read up on margins in Word and will but need to get help now with this. I can't make sense of the margin settings on the *horizontal ruler* and am not sure whether to use it manually or the Format capability on the toolbar. What I'm getting no matter how I change or set the *tab stop position* at FormatTabs (obviously I don't know how) is something that looks like this: __________________________________________________ ___________________ Dear Mr. Jones: Please note the following problem with the table. It was black and should have been brown. Can you send me the correct color of table as soon as possible so I'll have matching furniture. I would appreciate this very much. Best regards, Chad Harris __________________________________________________ ___ Thanks much in advance for the help. How do I justify these margins to look the way they should? Chad Harris |

G'Day Chad,
I am having a terrible problem understanding the connection between the example you give and any kind of Tab Setting. I can not see the need for ANY tabs in a simple 1 paragraph letter, and that leaves ME with a problem in responding. Please carry out the following exercise on a new document. Trying to keep it simple (The KISS principle): MARGINS should be set ONCE in: FilePage SetupMargins (tab) and will apply to the entire document. Use the default margins for the paper size and don't mess for now! RE-TYPE your "Example" text EXACTLY as shown below. Do NOT otherwise press ENTER. Do not press TAB. Do NOT pass GO Do NOT collect $200! LAYOUT This layout can be improved to meet your specific needs: INDENTS Select the entire letter. On the Horizontal Ruler at the left end, there is a small square under a pair of triangles - move this in from the left (it moves the triangles as a pair) to align the text to your satisfaction. Do the same with the small triangle at the right end, moving it to the left. Be quite extreme at first, in order to appreciate the effect of adjusting the Indents. FIRST LINE INDENTS Select the three paragraphs in the letter body. Again find the two triangles and square at the left end of the Horizontal Ruler - move the TOP triangle only further in from the left. The effect of this is best seen with longer paragraphs, comprising several sentences. PARAGRAPH SPACING Select the entire letter. FormatParagraph set "Spacing After" to "6 pt". The effect of this is best seen with longer paragraphs, comprising several sentences. JUSTIFICATION Select the entire letter. Try out "Left", "Centre", "Right" and "Full" justification. I hope that offers a few clues - there is much more. Forget WordPad!!!!!!!!!!! -- Regards, Pat Garard Australia _______________________ Example Dear Mr. Jones,ENTER ENTER Please note the following problem with the table.
