Default How do I insert a field in a dialog box?

I want to know if it's possible to insert a DocProperty field in the
customized number format used for numbered lists. We have to include a
Requirement number in each subheading -- this number includes an "R-", the
actual function number of 3-4 digits (which is a field called
"FunctionNumber"), followed by a dash and then an automatically generated
sequence number (1, 2, 3...). Example: R-5858-1. When you add that text to a
numbered heading, the resulting line looks something like: 1.1 R-5858-1,
which is cumbersome to say the least.

We'd like to eliminate the outline number part of the heading and somehow
include the FunctionNumber field in the actual Number Format box on the
Customize Outline Numbered List dialog box (i.e. R-XXXX-#, where XXXX is the
field, and the following # would be sequentially generated.

Any takers?

Hi Sam,

I may be instantly contradicted by someone more knowledgeable, but I'll
stick my neck out and say this can't be done with outline numbering.

The only thing that comes readily to mind is that you can put together an
AutoText entry consisting of the R-, the FunctionNumber field, the dash, and
a Seq field. Then you can make a macro that inserts the AutoText, applies
the appropriate (non-numbered) heading style, and updates all fields. That
macro can be given a toolbar button and/or keyboard shortcut.
