Default Word: editable mark up language in word document, LaTeX-esque

When I am formatting research papers, I sometimes run into formatting bugs
within the document. It would be great if I could see ALL of the formatting
mark up, like LaTeX or even have the ability to export in LaTeX compatible
format.

back when millions of WordPerfect users switched over to Word, that was
a common request (an equivalent to the RevealFormatting command in WP).
Alas, Word does obviously work very differently in this regard.

You can display all Word formatting characters easily (in Tools |
Options | View in versions up to 2003, for instance). But there simply
are no control characters per se for, say, a bold word.

Of course, you can convert a Word document to RTF, HTML, XML (Word 2003
professional) or take a look into the new 2007 file format directly
(which is zipped XML). Based on that, why, I'm pretty sure that the
LaTeX community will come up with a converter, in time.
