Has anyone smarter than me figured out how to set the default in "paragraphs"
to "Don't add extra lines to paragraphs of the same style"?
It seems like every time I open a new blank document I have to go through
the same routine and it's a ROYAL pain for me.

This is a style property; if you apply it to a given style and then save the
modified style back to the template, you should see the change reflected in
NEW blank documents (but not in existing documents).
