Default vertical ruler malfunction ???

Running XP Pro and OfficePro2002 ... suddenly on opening a new Word document
in Print Layout View the vertical ruler shows in the left hand margin but no
go at all ... all funtionality has disapeared.

Double click brings up Page Layout and Top and Bottom Margins show ... e.g.
1" ... but no top/bottom margin or any way to adjust.

Horizontal Margins work fine.

All help to restore vertical margins appreciated.
