Default opening word files from windows explorer loses their filenames

If I double click on the .doc in Explorer, it opens in Word but instead of
the file name it has a generic 'Document1', 'Document2' or whatever...never
used to do this but I don't know what I've changed

Word is treating the document as a template. If it is really a document
