Default Table of Figures (Word 2007)

Following the TOC in my document, I want to insert a Table of Figures. I have
inserted a section page break after the TOC. On the new page (new section), I
attempt to insert my Table of Figures, using a figure caption style to
generate this table. Soooooooo ... here's my question: why does Word want to
replace my TOC with my new Table of Figures?

Default Table of Figures (Word 2007)

Table of Contents and Table of Figures are both created using different
formulations of the TOC field. Table of figures, as done using Word 2007's
automated features, requires that figures were numbered using the SEQ field,
where FIGURE is used as the counter. When you insert the TOF using the
Insert Table of Figures tool in the References tab, Word looks for an
existing TOC field that contains \c "Figure" in the code, and offers to
replace it if one already exists. I've never seen that command futz with an
ordinary TOC field, and--here, at least, it gives you the option of NOT
replacing an existing TOF (e.g., if you want to insert a 2nd TOF then
manually edit the field to provide a different seq counter name).

If you used Word's built-in features to number figures, and used the Table
of Contents and Insert Table of Figures tools (in the References tab) to
insert the TOC and the TOF respectively, then Word will respect the existing
TOC when you insert the TOF. Are you saying that it's mistakenly selecting
the normal TOC field?
