Default footnotes

When I create a footnote both the footnote and the horizontal divider line
get formatted with a bullet (I can take it off the footnote text but not the
line). I can't remove it as the custom mark in the footnote dialog box, so I
can't stop it happening... and it looks stupid.

Help appreciated

This suggests that you may have added a bullet to the Normal style (which is
one illustration of why I advise against customizing Normal style at all).
Switch to Normal view, View | Footnotes, click the arrow beside the list box
and choose Footnote Separator, then do what is required to correct the
formatting.

Many thanks - my first foray into using styles properly, instead of hacking
till I got what I want. That was a big help.
