Default Can Table AutoFormat apply formatting to multiple heading rows?

I am using Word 2003.

I have a table with two heading rows that would repeat across pages. The
Table AutoFormat options suggest that the special formatting will be applied
to both ("Apply special formats to" says "Heading rows," not "Heading row"),
but if I apply the AutoFormat I want it effects only the first row, and
actually resets the multiple heading rows.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug/feature in Word?
