Default cross-reference separate numbers

When I bring up the cross-reference box, there is a box followed by the words
"Separate numbers with" and another box. I am unable to put a check mark in
the first box, or write anything in the second box. As a result, if I have
two cross-references in the same place, they show up looking as a
cross-reference to endnote/footnote 23, rather than as cross-references to
endnotes/footnotes 2,3 as it should. How do I fix this??

You have to insert the comma yourself between the two REF fields.
