Default . dat files openen ?

Hi

I've a file on pc that's called...Backup.dat 1,1 Mb
How do i open that file in Microsoft word or excel ?

The file is file from my job and i save it on a 3.5 disk
for home working , but when i open it there are only
strange tokens on my screen
????
who can help me ?
