Default IS IT POSSIBLE TO FIND A DELETED WORD DOCUMENT?

I closed a document without saving in error. Is it possible to find it on my
hardrive. It was a long document.

If you never saved it, there is nothing to retrieve. As Jack Gillis says, if
you had ever saved it before, then the previously saved version is still
intact.

curious. Not sure how one would look for it though; sounds
pretty tedious. What is Fast Save was turned on?

If a document is closed normally, the temporary file that Word creates is
deleted automatically.

Turning on "Allow Fast Saves" will not make any difference and with the
speed of most modern computers is not necessary and in fact is not to be
recommended because it can lead to corruption of documents.
