Default How to switch off pop-up rulers?

I seem to have inadvertently switched on the horizontal and vertical pop-up
rulers. The only sign of this is that two narrow strips have suddenly
appeared at the left-hand and top edges of the editing screen (in Print
Layout): I didn't realise what they were until I chanced to rest the cursor
on one of them and the ruler appeared.

How could I have switched this on without realising it? And more
importantly, how can I switch it off again, please? I've searched the help
files for information, but to no avail.

Many thanks.

This is achieved by a combination of factors.
View ruler when checked will always display the rulers.
View ruler when unchecked, will cause the ruler to hide and unhide when
the cursor is passed over the area if tools options general provide
feedback with animation is checked. If this latter option is unchecked the
rulers are not displayed.

Graham,

View ruler when unchecked, will cause the ruler to hide and unhide when
the cursor is passed over the area if tools options general provide
feedback with animation is checked. If this latter option is unchecked the
rulers are not displayed.

That was the one! Thank you so much. It's beyond my understanding how I
could have checked that box inadvertently.

To add to what Graham has said, View | Ruler affects only the horizontal
ruler. The vertical ruler is turned on or off by a check box on the View tab
of Tools | Options.

That's only partially true, Suzanne.

Unchecking View Ruler turns off both horizontal and vertical rulers.

Checking View Ruler turns on the horizontal ruler and enables the turning
on or off of the vertical ruler using the option under Tools Options
View.

Enjoy,
Tony

Interesting. I hadn't realized that because (a) I always keep them both on,
and (b) I work in Normal view, anyway, where I have great difficulty making
Word keep the horizontal ruler on.
