how can i type in italian using word 2003.

Slowly. Or you need an Italian Language pack and an Italian Keyboard.
Language Packs are available from Microsoft retail outlets.

Actually, Italian requires virtually no special characters (just a couple of
accented vowels), so it should be very easy (to TYPE) compared to most
European languages. Proofing, of course, is another issue.
