Default How can I select a word, then delete it with spacebar?

In my old word programs, I have always been able to highlight a word or
phrase and delete it by hitting the spacebar. Now it will delete only one
letter at a time. Can I change the default setting?

Works for me in Word 2002. What version of Word have you got?

Check under Tools, Options, Edit tab that the 'Typing Replaces Selection'
option is checked.

Hi Lakewood,

Even when you get this sorted as Terry described, you should
understand that what you're doing isn't really "deleting" the selected
text -- you're *replacing* it with a space character. You then have an
unnecessary space character in the document. It would be better to
select text and press the Delete key -- that's what it's for.

Actually, using the Delete key in the first place would not cause the
problem (though it's subject to a different Options setting problem), but if
you try to use Backspace, you will encounter it since Word considers
backspacing "typing."

When I use my delete key I get a confirmation bar in the bottom left of the
window. and have to hit either y or n to delete it. Is there a way to turn
that off?
