Default Header - seperate chapter, continue page number

Hi,
I'm creating a report with several chapters, and I want the header to have
both the page number and the chapter number and name.
The problem I've come across is if "same as previous" is selected, the page
number continues but I cannot change the chapter number. If I deselect "same
as previous" I can change the chapter number but the page number starts from
1 again.

Hopefully I'm missing something silly here!
Cheers,
C
P.S. I'm using word 2007

You can insert the chapter number and name in the header with two style refs,
one for the number and one for the name. They would look like this:
{STYLEREF "Heading 1" \n \* MERGEFORMAT} {STYLEREF "Heading 1" \*
MERGEFORMAT}
...assuming that chapter 1 is in the heading1 style. They would appear in
the header something like this: 1 Introduction.

The header and page numbering in sections are quite independent. As Pam has
mentioned, you can change the header without unlinking the header sections
(or in fact even without using a section break) by using a StyleRef field,
but so can you restart numbering without unlinking. In any case, the
restarted numbering is unrelated to the unlinking. Just go to Format Page
Number in the new section and set it to "Continue from previous section."
