Default change a main doc into a data source

I had a data source that got saved as a main doc, how can I change it back to
a data source?

As long as the document contains data in the form of a table with the first
row of the table being the names of the mergefields, it can be used as a
datasource.

You cannot specifically save any file, other than a main doc, as a main doc.
So, I am not really sure what you think that you did.

If what you have is a document full of labels that you would like to convert
to a data source, then:

See "Convert Labels into Mail Merge Data File" on fellow MVP Graham Mayor's

That's what I thought but no every time I try to open the data source as a
data source I get an error message telling me that the data source cannot be
opened because it is not a data source and something about headers

Well in that case, you should open it as a regular Word document and insert
a row at the top of the table into which you enter names that can serve as
the field names
